Each year soon after Town Meeting, the Select Board makes appointments to various town committees, board, and commissions. Here’s our whole list!
This year these appointments have been delayed to April 13, 2020 by the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. If you are interested in serving the town, you can snail mail a letter of interest to the Town of Plainfield, PO Box 217, Plainfield, VT 05667, or send an email to our Town Clerk or any Select Board member (Sasha Thayer, Tammy Farnham, or Jim Volz). Conservation Commission The commission oversees the natural resources of the town by managing the town forest, the Conservation Fund, assisting with Green Up and other needs in the town. Town Constable Essential qualities for Constable for the Town of Plainfield are good communication skills, attention to detail, willingness to be disturbed by calls for assistance any time of day (or night), ability to collaborate with other town officers and law enforcement officers, and an orientation to solving problems through negotiation. In the event that the constable is authorized to enforce municipal ordinances, the constable is also expected to prosecute ordinance violation tickets before the Vermont Judicial Bureau at a location in Washington County when a ticket is appealed. The constable will also prepare a written report to be included in the annual Town Report for the Town of Plainfield. Preference will be given to residents of the Town of Plainfield. The constable for the Town of Plainfield does not have law enforcement authority, however s/he may be authorized by the Select Board for the Town of Plainfield to enforce municipal ordinances. Individuals interested in serving as constable for the Town of Plainfield are encouraged to obtain an application from the Town Clerk and return it for consideration along with a letter of interest which includes your skills, experience, and training and lists references. Please file your application with the Plainfield Town Clerk. Hazard Mitigation Committee The committee has up to six member appointed each year for one year terms. The role of Hazard Mitigation is to gather information and to develop and provide long term recommendations to the Select Board to mitigate the impact of future floods and other hazardous events on public safety and infrastructure. Planning Commission The commission recommends updates to the Town Plan and amendments to Plainfield’s Zoning Ordinance. Public hearings on our recent update of the Town Plan will be happening soon. Revolving Loan Fund The committee reviews applications and makes recommendations to the Select Board for loans from Revolving Loan Fund. The fund’s purpose is improve the condition of historic structures, create housing, and improve the vitality of the downtown areas. Committee members serve 1 year terms. Social Concerns Committee Each November, the committee reviews applications from organizations seeking support from the Town and makes recommendations for March Town Meeting. These are organizations that nurture residents' health, educational, and welfare needs. The Select Board also makes the following appointments. Are you interested?

For our Town Meeting this year, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, candidates for elected office need only file the completed Consent of Candidate Form with the candidate's name exactly as it appears on the voter checklist. This Consent of Candidate Form must be filed with the Town Clerk no later than 5 PM on the sixth Monday preceding the day of the election (17 V.S.A. §2681(b)). This year that date is March 1st.
